House and Senate Retirements. As of Dec. 14 2023, 40 members of Congress—seven members of the U.S. Senate and 33 members of the U.S. House—announced they would not seek re-election in 2024.
Of the U.S. Senate members not running for re-election, six—U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.), and Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.)—announced their retirements from public office, while the other—U.S. Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.)—is running for governor of Indiana. (from Ballotpedia).
